Self-love in a Relationship

Self-love and self-care are sort of trendy buzzwords these days. Influencers on social media love to talk about these, and sometimes they talk about it because they’re trying to sell you something. But just because it’s trendy doesn’t mean it’s not valuable!

Loving yourself might seem selfish, but no one should feel bad about focusing on their own happiness. Finding self-love is especially important when it comes to your relationship with your romantic partner.

Know what you want

Knowing what you want is important when you begin looking for a significant other – especially when you partner with a matchmaker to find that significant other. This is crucial, because in order for a matchmaker to get to know you, you must be able to express what it is you are looking for in a relationship.

If you love yourself, then you will best be able to identify the kinds of people who give you what you desire in a romantic relationship. And, while a relationship requires that you care about someone, it’s a two-way street.

Know what you need

There’s knowing what you want in a relationship, and there’s also knowing what you need. If you know what you need from someone else, then you will best be able to continue loving yourself. After all, a significant other is not a replacement for self-love. In order to be loved by someone else, you must also love yourself.

Having self-love is an action. It’s not a feeling or sensation you have towards yourself. It’s just like having a loving relationship in that love forces you to act. Having self-love means you treat yourself well, whether that’s by pursuing happiness, being healthy, or something else.

Get what you deserve

If you don’t love yourself, then how will you know that you are getting what you deserve in a relationship? Lacking self-love means you won’t be able to fight for what it is you need from a relationship.

When you love someone, you want what is best for them, right? You wouldn’t want to see a parent, or a sibling, or a best friend in a relationship that does not work for them. This is why self-love is so important. You must love yourself enough to be willing to fight for the love that you are owed.

Give to others

Loving yourself is not a lonely activity. Loving yourself means you are performing at your peak, which means you will best be able to show love to your significant other. When you love yourself, it means you take care of you, which gives you the ability to take care of others as well.

Imagine being with someone who doesn’t take care of themself. They probably wouldn’t be the most pleasant person to be around. They might not be very happy, or might just not take care of themselves. This is why self-love is so important in a relationship. It’s like the fuel to a fire, or the light to a plant. Loving yourself allows the love towards others to spread.
